Death Pit - Version X

Author:

Arena

Aes vs Fors vs Hound vs Wc
Rating:

Reviewed by: The Original Shadar Logoth

General Geometry General Geometry Notes:
8 This is on par with Legend in many ways, but a few flaws prevent it from reaching parity. The two curved staircases are very shoddy, and look as if they were merely tossed together at the last minute.
Geometry Detail Geometry Detail Notes:
4 Also, the geometry is not detailed enough; some effort has been made, but in this regard the level is only half-finished.

Textures Texture Notes:
8 This category makes up for the failings in geometry. The textures are well-chosen and are almost perfectly aligned. The only shortcomings are that in some cases the change between textures is too abrupt, and there are problems with the aforementioned stairs, which should just be redone in any case.

Lighting Lighting Notes:
8 The lights are properly sourced, and the sources have coronas attached. The lighting serves to convey the spooky mood of this level very well. There is only one problem, and that is that the firewaver light effect is much too prominent in the uppermost floor of the level.

Sound / Music Sound and Music Notes:
7 An ambient 'mood' sound is present, adding to the atmosphere of the level. The noise of Mashadar adds also, although the fire sounds seem more appropriate for smaller infernos than this.

Angreal Assessment Angreal Notes:
6 Unfortunately, Angreal placement in this level needs a great deal of work. Except for the andilay roots, angreal are not placed with any regard for realism. Unless there is a very good reason for it, angreal should NOT be suspended as far up in the air as some are in this level. To the designer's credit, the post powerful angreal are the ones placed in such ways, but still, this should not happen.

Playability - Scripting Play Scripting Notes:
6 Pathing is in some ways a little bit TOO good, as it enables the persistent Mashadar to latch onto players almost anywhere and make accidental death more frequent than player kills; this is also very annoying when spawning over the bridge across the lava pool, where not only is it easy to drop into said pool but also to get grabbed by Mashadar immediately.
Playability - Theme Play Theme Notes:
7 The theme is very impressive, and fighting off the incessant Mashadar adds another environmental hazard to the standard methods, such as lava pits (which, by the way, is also included).
Playability - Style Play Style Notes:
7 The level seems best suited to 4+ players, although two should be able to manage fairly well. The fast-paced deathmatch that would result might suffice to minimize the problems with the level, although it won't make them completely unnoticeable.
Playability - Fun Fun Play Notes:
6 However, the level will not necessarily be universally appealing, so don't expect to see it in a lot of server rotations.
